Baker County Circuit Court

The Baker County Circuit Court is the 8th Judicial District of Oregon. One elected judge serves the district. Judge Matthew B. Shirtcliff is the Presiding Judge. The court sits on the second floor of the Baker County Courthouse at 1995 3rd Street in Baker City.

Baker County was created in 1862. It was named in honor of Senator Edward D. Baker, the only member of Congress killed in the Civil War. The county has had three courthouses, all on the same site. The first was a two-story wooden building from 1869. It burned down in 1885 and was replaced by brick. The current courthouse is a three-story building completed in 1909. It was built from gray volcanic stone quarried a few miles south of town. All Baker County divorce decree records are stored in this historic building.
